Hey Kids, Here we go...first BOOK REPORT on the new website! Left home April 24th, headed to MERLEFEST. Great ride up with our old friend, Thelma Tilling, who arrived from the Jersey Channel Islands the week before.
Great to be headed North after a wonderful Winter back in St. Pete. The drive was beautiful and North Carolina was a welcome sight. Met up with old friends and musicians and had a swell time. John & Marla Hammond were in our hotel and we got to hang out with them and have some wonderful meals. Yes there are some great resturants in Wilkesboro!
The Greatest Acoustic Blues Show on Earth, this year was a huge success. Great music & stories by Fruteland Jackson, Michael Roach, Mary Flower, Stefan Grossman and John Hammond. We had a packed house at The Chris Austin Stage for the entire day.
A festival highlight was Sam Bush's set Saturday night. Joining Sam's band was Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Susan Tedesci and Derek Trucks in a rousing tribute to Levon Helm. Up On Criple Creek was the highlight for me! It could be heard all the way up to The Hampton Inn, where guests came out to the parking lot to enjoy the magic moment.
We made our way up the East Coast, to NJ where we "camped out" in Jersey City at The Liberty Park Campground/Marina. A short ferry ride to Wall Street carried us to Manhatan, where we visited with our pal Woody Mann. What a great way to visit "The City". Woody has also been a friend of Robert & Thelma Tilling since those old days. We will be doing tribute concerts as part of a retospective Art Show, for our dear departed friend Robert in the Jersey Channel Islands (UK) this July.
After a few days visiting family in Queens we said our good byes to Thelma, who flew home from JFK and we were on our way to New England continue the Spring Tour. The Ferry from Orient Point to New London is one of our favorite journeys and the weather was perfect!
Nancy & I Look forward to seeing you all on the road in the months to follow. The Summer Tour will carry us all over the country, from The Atlantic to The Pacific with a short trip to the UK as well.
